Short answer: employees reach an Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) by phone, mobile app, online chat or video, at any hour, and can be referred to face to face counselling. The first contact is with a qualified counsellor, the service is free to the employee, and the employer is never told who called.

Access is the question HR teams in the UAE ask us most, after price. This guide walks through what an employee does, what happens next and what the company sees.

The ways an employee can get in touch

Channel How it works Best for
Phone A dedicated number, open 24 hours a day, answered by a counsellor Anyone, including staff without a smartphone or a desk
Mobile app Call, video, text chat or book an appointment from the phone People who want privacy or prefer not to speak aloud
Website and live chat Chat with the team, send a request, or use articles, videos and self-assessments Office staff and people who want to read first
Video Scheduled sessions with a counsellor or coach Remote teams and people who travel
Face to face Arranged by the counsellor with a local practitioner when it is the right fit People who prefer to meet in person

What happens on the first contact

  1. A counsellor answers. The employee is not passed to a call centre to book a slot for next week. They speak to a qualified professional straight away.
  2. They talk it through. Often that first conversation is enough to settle the immediate problem and agree what to do next.
  3. The counsellor sets up the next step. That may be a course of short-term counselling, a coach, or practical help such as legal, financial or childcare information.
  4. The service follows up. The employee is not left to find their own way through a list of names.

Is it confidential?

Yes, and this is the point that decides whether people use it. The service is run by an independent provider, not by the employer. HR receives anonymised totals only, such as how many people used the service and the broad types of issue. No names, no details. The usual legal limits apply where there is a serious risk to someone’s safety.

Who can use it, and when

  • Every employee on the headcount, from the first day of the programme.
  • Family members, where the plan includes them. Many do.
  • Managers, who have their own advice line for handling a difficult situation in their team.
  • Any hour, any day. Nights, weekends and public holidays are covered.

Languages

The UAE workforce is one of the most international in the world, so language matters. Programmes delivered by a global provider can answer in dozens of languages and provide materials in many more. When you ask for a proposal, list the languages your workforce speaks and have them confirmed in writing.

Access for staff without a desk or a smartphone

Site, retail, hospitality and logistics teams often have no private office and limited data. The phone line covers them. Posters, wallet cards and short briefings in the right languages do more for these teams than an email ever will. A good launch plans for this.

How the programme is launched

Access only works if people know the service exists and trust it. A standard launch takes about 60 days and includes a kick-off with your account manager, promotion materials, and orientation sessions for employees and for managers. After launch, regular reminders keep the service visible through the year.

When a manager is worried about someone

Managers can call their own advice line to talk through how to approach an employee who is struggling. They can then remind the employee of the service or, where appropriate, make a formal referral. The employee’s conversations stay confidential either way.

Frequently asked questions

Do employees pay to use the EAP?

No. The employer pays a fixed fee and the service is free to the employee at the point of use.

Will my employer know I called?

No. The employer only receives anonymised totals.

Can I use it for a problem that is not about work?

Yes. Most contacts are about personal matters such as relationships, family, money, grief or stress.
